Best of Kiev » Chocolate House
Address: Украина, Киев, ул. Шелковичная, 17
The building is made in Venetian renaissance style by prominent architect Vladimir Nikolaev in the 80-es of the XIX century. The Chocolate House was built for contractor Mogiltsev according to his own conception; there lived famous men of science, socio-political and state life. The House is located in historical part of the city, in Pechersky district.
The architectural appearance of interior is made in different historical styles: Gothic (dining-room), Mauritanian, Baroque (cabinet), Russian and Art Nouveau (living-room). Embossed wooden door and window framing, panels, curtain holders, cast window hardware, stained-glass windows, lamps, tile stoves are of great artistic value. The large stateroom on the second floor is decorated with modeling of sculptured elements. Wood is widely used in the decoration of rooms: the walls of one room are covered with embossed oak panels and ceiling timber caissons. The whole décor of the house has no accidental details, everything is tight-knit, just look closer. Over the corner windows are winged torches, symbols of building perfection and a cue that here lives a craftsman; in the center there are dogs heads in rosettes, which symbolize that the master likes hunting (the head of his beloved dog Tresor is also engraved); swags of fruits and vegetables give a cue that the owner of the house is an amateur gardener, on his lands grew wondrous tomatoes, grapes, lemons, bananas, pineapples which is evidenced on the second floor window trimmers. It is a marvel that the leaves on the windows of the first floor resemble chocolate garnishment on confectionery, that imply master’s partiality for sweets, and that’s where the name of the building takes its origin. Nowadays, in the Chocolate House spectacles for children take place and a childish art gallery is situated.
