The Monument to Taras Shevchenko, the great Ukrainian poet and artist is situated in the National Park, bearing his name, in front of the main building of the National University of Ukraine where he used to work. The monument was unveiled on March 6, 1939, 75 years after the poet’s death. The unveiling was associated with Shevchenko’s 125th anniversary. The stature is 6.5 meters in height and is installed on a red-granite plinth with dates of his birth and his death and a well-known quotation of his poem “Testament”. The park where the monument is located is considered to be the most cozy and comfortable in Kiev, and the size of the monument matches in appearance with the size of park and the bright red color of the University building. The stature of Taras Shevchenko is made of bronze by a famous sculptor Manizer. It should be mentioned that the square under the monument has always served a place of patriotic meetings. Nowadays the monument to Taras Shevchenko, the great poet and artist is one of the symbols of modern Kiev.
