The Monument to the Founders of Kiev located near Dnieper is considered to be the symbol of Ukrainian capital that objectifies its longstanding history. The Monument was unveiled in spring, 1982 in the Dniprovska Naberezhna park near Paton Bridge. This event was timed to coincide with 1500th Anniversary of Kiev foundation. The sculptural composition is made in the shape of a boat, on which stand the statures of brothers Kyi, Shchek and Khoriv and their sister Lybid that are the storied founders of the capital city of Kiev. According to an ancient legend, they were astonished by the beauty of the Dnieper hills, stayed here to settle down and named their colony after the eldest brother Kiev.
Metropolitan newly-weds have a tradition. The day of their marriage they come to the monument of the founders of Kiev and fill up the boat with flowers for luck. There formed such popular belief that a couple should turn their back upon the monument and throw the bouquet over the head. If it hits on target it means that home life will be prosperous. During warm season almost every day you can see wedding corteges and happy newly wedded couples near the monument.
