The Monument to Yaroslav the Wise is situated in the mini-park near the Golden Gates which is one of the most significant historical places of the Ukraine’s capital Kiev. Yaroslav the Wise was a key figure in the early years of Kievan Russia. During Yaroslav the Wise’s ruling, Kievan Russia became a powerful state that embraced a considerable part of Eastern Europe and joined the ranks of supreme civilized European states of that period of time. During the reign of Yaroslav the Wise the borders of Kiev were sensibly extended, The Golden Gates, St. George, St. Irene of Macedonia and St. Sophia cathedrals were constructed. It was Yaroslav the Wise governing when Russkaya Pravda, the legal code of Old Russian feodal law, was drawn up. Ivan Kavaleridze, prominent sculptor, film director and play-writer, is the author of the monument’s maquette. The stature is made of bronze, Yaroskav the Wise looks towards St. Sophia Cathedral. The Prince holds in his hands the miniature of this cathedral. The unveiling ceremony of Yaroslav the Wise’s bronze statue took place in 1997 and was confined to the Day of Kiev.
