Excursions in Kiev & suburbs » Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine (Pyrohiv)
Museum 'Pyrohiv' is an open-air architectural and landscape complex. All historical and ethnographic regions of Ukraine are represented over an area of more than 150 hectares. Over 300 monuments of folk architecture of XVI-XX centuries were brought here from different regions of Ukraine. The museum was founded on the outskirts of Kiev in 1976. Its territory is divided into sectors based on time and territorial principles. The exhibits presented in 'Pyrohiv' acquaint visitors with architecture of Ukrainian villages, peasant life and folk art of Ukrainians. You simply move back into the past: ancient Ukrainian wattle and daub huts, churches of XVI-XVII centuries, windmills – all the mentioned were collected in different regions of Ukraine, delivered to the museum and restored. A mini-museum is arranged in each hut where the life of Ukrainians of past centuries – furniture, dishes, clothes, musical instruments, working ware – is shown.
Estates with original rural houses and outbuildings are formed, according to ethnographers, with documentary authenticity and are grouped according to specific features of settlements planning in one or another historical-ethnographic and geographic region. Second life was given to wooden churches which were transported here – it is a unique phenomenon in the world architecture. Ideological and compositional center of 'Pyrohiv' is an exposition of windmills which is located at the highest hill.
The main value of the museum perhaps lies in its naturalness – walking around its large territory you will not just see the museum exhibits but enjoy real Ukrainian nature, listen to folk music, get to know folklore and culture of the country of different centuries.
The museum is beautiful in different seasons as Ukrainian climate is clearly presented in all four times of a year: the architectural and landscape complex is beautiful under the bright summer sun and in snowy winter, in the gold of autumn and in spring bloom.
Besides in a warm season after a walk around the museum you can lie on the grass, ride a horse, dine at a restaurant – all this in the open air and with live Ukrainian music playing.
