Excursions in Kiev & suburbs » Unique Podil
The name 'Podil' comes from the settlements of citizens 'po dolu', that is in the valley of the Dnieper River. Here, at Podil, there were markets, occurred trade fairs, appeared the first Kiev pharmacy, the first mill, the first water supply system, the first power plant, and the first Kiev higher educational institution. It was Kiev-Podil in the end of the XV century that was granted the Magdeburg Rights. Since ancient times the Podil area was inhabited by simple Kievans – handicraftsmen, traders, and seafarers. Podil still has the reputation of a district that is spiritually close to the people. Narrow old streets with small cozy houses, mysterious romantic courtyards, temples of different periods and religions – these are the features of this remarkable central district of Kiev.
During the excursion around Podil you'll see its attractions such as the Kiev-Mohyla Academy, Kontraktova Ploscha – Contract Square (the Contract House, Gostynny Dvir (trading complex), the 'Samson' fountain, Bogoroditsa Pirogoscha Church, Florovsky Monastery, Pharmacy Museum, Mykilsko-Prytyska Church and many other great historical and architectural monuments.
